About Blue Farm Directory

A national map of small farms selling direct to the people who eat their food. Free to use, free to be listed on, independent.

What's happening to farms right now

  • Years of drought. 61% of the continental US was in drought as of May 2026. (US Drought Monitor)
  • Tariffs closed the export market. Economists project $44 billion in lost net cash income on 2025 and 2026 crops. China, long the largest buyer of American soybeans, stopped purchasing. (NDSU)
  • $1 billion in local food funding canceled. In March 2025, USDA ended the programs that bought produce from small farms for schools and food banks. Crops were already in the ground. (Civil Eats)
  • Fertilizer spiked 36%. After the Strait of Hormuz closed in February 2026, nitrogen prices jumped, adding $27 per acre for a corn farmer. (farmdoc, University of Illinois)
  • Then the beef quota. Drought had forced ranchers to sell off breeding stock, dropping the national herd to 86.2 million head, the lowest since 1951. High prices were finally letting them rebuild. On February 9, 2026, the administration quadrupled the Argentine beef import quota to 80,000 metric tons. (NPR, Farm Policy News)
"Instead of imports that sideline American ranchers, we should be focused on solutions that cut red tape, lower production costs, and support growing our cattle herd."
Senator Deb Fischer, Republican of Nebraska

The result: 315 farms filed for bankruptcy in 2025, up 46% and the highest since 2020. (US Courts)

Why "Blue Farm," and why every farm is welcome

The  movement to support blue farmers started because people wanted a way to support farms whose owners didn't vote for the policies now threatening to put them out of business. That's a real thing to want, and we're not pretending otherwise. A farm can identify as a Blue Farm if it chooses to. The farm makes that call on its own listing. Nobody makes it for them.

And every farm is welcome here. That's deliberate.

Plenty of the farms getting hit hardest are farms whose owners backed the administration that made these decisions. We're not running a purity test. There is no version of this where the farms in red counties fail and the rest of us thrive.

There is not much left that Americans across the divide still have in common. Dinner is one of them.

Buy from Blue Farms if that matters to you. It's what started this, and the designation is honest.I

t's also one filter among several. You can search by how a farm grows, regenerative, pasture-raised, no synthetic pesticides, certified organic. By who owns it. By whether they ship to you or sell at your farmers market. Search that way for a while and you may find more common ground than you expected.

From the Field

Behind every statistic is a farmer, a family, and a food system under pressure. When policies fail, local communities pay the price. But when you buy from local values-aligned farms, you become part of the solution.

“To say that we’re just going to sell it domestically is like saying you should put 20 gallons of gas in your 15 gallon gas tank.”
Chad Franke
President, Rocky Mountain Farmers’ Union
Time Magazine, 4 Mar 2025.
“My payment is made in October, and so far, I have not received that payment because of the shutdown… I was going to use that money for purchasing inputs, both to finish this year’s crop and for next year.”
Stu Swanson
President, Iowa Corn Growers Association
Politico, Oct 10 2025.
"The people who are new to agriculture, those young farmers who haven't saved money for times like this, they're going to be in trouble and a lot of those folks are going to go broke."And if this continues, a lot of folks like me are going to go broke too."
Jon Tester
Third-generation farmer, Montana
BBC, 14 Sep 2025.
“For the third straight year, farmers are losing money on almost every major crop planted… Adding even more costs and reducing markets for American agricultural goods could create an economic burden some farmers may not be able to bear.”
Zippy Duvall
President, American Farm Bureau Federation
Reuters, 4 Mar 2025.
“He’s out there with his wrecking ball just throwing tariffs around.”
Barb Kalbach
Fourth-generation corn/soy farmer, Iowa
Time Magazine, 4 Mar 2025.
“In the fields, I would say 70% of the workers are gone… If 70% of your workforce doesn’t show up, 70% of your crop doesn’t get picked and can go bad in one day.”
Lisa Tate
Sixth-generation farmer, Ventura County, CA

Who runs this and how it's funded

The Bigger Picture

Blue Farm Directory is built and maintained by Lit Marketing as a volunteer project. Nobody takes a salary. It's independent, not affiliated with the Blue Dot Farmers movement that inspired it, and funded entirely by donations. No listing fees, no ads, no farm ranked higher for money.

Two things keep it going: people sharing it, and donations. Post it, send it to a friend, and if you know a farm selling direct, send them the Add a Farm link. A directory only works when there's a farm near the person searching. Donations cover the map, the forms, and the sign-up tools, which runs a few hundred dollars a month.
